Wool Shoddy is the matted wool from a sheeps rear end and it is an important byproduct of the wool textile industry. An enterprising Yorkshire man who had worked in the textile industry for 35 years was aware of the huge value of this discarded wool and decided it could be put to better use than being burnt or sent to landfill. He knew that it had the following properties:
- slow release fertilizer, contain naturally occurring potash, phosphates and nitrogen
- completely biodegradable
- rich organic source of nitrogen
- other elements beneficial to plant development.
He got together with a sheep farming pal and decided to put the waste wool to good use by using Modern technology to deliver the benefits of wool and natural organic elements in pellet form. The pellets are ideal for a surface mulch, giving the additional advantages of ...
- weed suppression
- soil moisture retention
- soil structure improvement
He called this product Grow Aid with the aim of marketing it for that very purpose. Like all good inventors he tried it out himself, liberally sprinkling the pellets over his flower beds and he then waited to see the benefits. The next morning he was disturbed by his irate wife demanding to know what he had done. The lawn between the beds was covered in slugs. He scratched his head for a bit and then it dawned upon him that the wool pellets were repelling the slugs. Further research showed that the woolen fibres and other abrasive particles in the pellets irritate and aggravate the “slugs foot” and the hygroscopic nature of wool fibres absorbs some of the slimy substance underneath the “slugs foot”. The end result is the slugs won’t crawl over the pellets and they bugger off somewhere else.
And so a remarkable product was born – Slug Gone aka Slug Buggers
